Practical Hierarchy in Hinduism Practice

Vedas are considered to be the highest level of truth and knowledge. They are above the devotional ladder given below.

A commonly recognised devotional hierarchy (non-sectarian) is:

1. Upaniṣadic Mantras / Mahāvākyas

Direct statements of ultimate reality from the Upaniṣads, revealing Brahman and the nature of the Self.

2. Gāyatrī Mantra

Universal Vedic mantra for inner illumination, discipline, and divine guidance.

3. Viṣṇu Sahasranāma

Thousand names of Viṣṇu from the Mahābhārata; considered complete nāma-upāsanā for Kali Yuga.

4. Bhagavad Gītā Recitation

Daily recitation or study of the Gītā integrates bhakti, jñāna, and karma yoga.

5. Śiva Sahasranāma

Devotional hymn glorifying Śiva, widely followed in Śaiva traditions.

6. Lalitā Sahasranāma

Profound Śākta hymn from the Brahmāṇḍa Purāṇa, central to Śrīvidyā upāsanā.

7. Other Sahasranāmas & Stotras

Devotional hymns addressed to various deities, saints, and philosophical ideals.
